A Conspiracy Called Tata Sky

India's latest entrant in direct-to-home TV has utter disregard for your rights and uses discrete means to take control over them (Last updated on Jun-06, 2008)

Last Friday I bought a Tata Sky set-top box. Today, I returned it to get a complete refund. This is my story of why I did that and what I learned in the process. This isn't a rant, hopefully a bit of education for current and future Tata Sky owners and perhaps even a precursor to change.

I chose Tata Sky over Dish TV because the reviews indicated they have a superior user experience. This seems to be true, as far as interacting with the TV is concerned. Their menus are intuitive and it was easy to grasp all their features. This is true about their website as well, which although ridden with flash, is easier to use compared to Dish.

So why did I still chose to go for a refund? Because of the fundamentally unfair and cleverly restrictive ways in which everything in the service is designed. Tata Sky is great for anyone who only cares about watching TV. But if you refuse to be treated as an idiot who cannot see right from worng and refuse to have your rights trampled, Tata Sky is not for you.

I have three main issues with their service. But first, here's a bit of an introduction, how Tata Sky DTH works:

Issue #1 Hardware Ownership: what am I paying for?

  • You don't own the dish, Tata Sky does
That's correct. They will never advertise this, nor will the dealer tell you about it when you make the purchase. The dish belongs to Tata Sky, if you deactivate they take back the dish and the digicard.
  • You do own the Set-Top-Box (STB) but it's worthless without the dish
The purhcase you make is only for the set-top box. You will get a receipt for the set-top box and the renewal card. The Tata Sky engineer will bring the dish with him at the time of the installation. The dish transmits the signal from the satellite to the set-top box, also called satellite receiver, or in Tata Sky's case - the digicomp. In UK, it's called the digibox. The set-top box by itself is of no use without the dish.
  • In fact, if you deactivate tomorrow, they may take away both the dish AND the set-top box
This was the most shocking bit of information in the contract that Tata Sky wanted me to sign at the time of installation. Clause 11.3 of the contract explicitly states that Tata Sky can remove all the "hardware" from my place at the time of deactivation of service.  It doesn't define what hardware is or makes any distinction between dish and digicomp.

If you are a Tata Sky customer and you wish to stop the service tomorrow, by signing that contract, you have permitted them to take away the set-top box for which you paid in full. Don't believe me? Call up customer support and ask them to read out clause #11.3.

Issue #2 User Privacy: what about my rights?

  • They store all your usage information - how you watch your TV, what you watch, for how long and when
The contract states that Tata Sky may store every aspect of how you use their service. This allows them to create your detailed profile which will include your TV watching habits, how you order their premium services and so on. They already have all your contact information. Can you see where it's going?
  • They can profit from that information by selling it to third parties (read advertisers)
That's correct. By signing the contract you have agreed to let them use that information in any way they choose including making good money from it by selling it to "third parties". You, of course, get no share in this revenue stream. You get something else.
  • Be prepared to receive lots of very targeted ads (read spam)
This is the obvious implication of giving up your rights. Tata Sky knows which shows you've set as your favorites, they know what kind of movies you like, the channels you watch or don't watch, how many times you've ordered movies in the last three months. With this wealth of information, advertisers can draw up a pretty good picture of you so don't be surprised to get mailers online or offline that seem to be designed just for you.

Issue #3 Restrictive trade practices: locked away till eternity

  • You shall remain locked to receive Tata Sky forever, no Dish TV or another DTH service for you
If you buy a cell phone you expect it to work with any SIM card. Except when you get the phone for a discount, in which case, you can only use it with one particular SIM. You'd think that the same would be true for DTH, but no. With Tata Sky or Dish TV for that matter, even after paying for the equipment in full, you are not allowed to access the other's services. As a Tata Sky customer you are forever locked to receive only their services. This is clearly a restrictive trade practice.

TRAI, the regulatory authority that monitors DTH in India, is apparently working on the interoperability issue. But so far the players can behave the way they wish until the rules come into being. However, even if they allow inter-connection, it will be of little use with Tata Sky as you will lose the dish if you deactivate and perhaps even the set-top box.
  • You shall remain devoid of even Free-To-Air channels if you don't renew subscription on time
Free-to-Air channels are supposed to be, well, Free-to-Air. Not so with Tata Sky. If you don't renew the subscription on the due date, by 12 midnight, all your channels will be inaccessible including FTA.
  • You shall remain locked to the direction in which the dish is positioned
I called up customer support to ask whether one can somehow receive FTA channels broadcasted by other countries. Turns out, I'm not allowed to move the dish and in fact, it is not movable in the first place since it needs to be pointed at a very specific angle and has no tolerence for error.
  • You shall remain locked to the settings of the set-top-box
The user interface of Tata Sky does not permit one to setup alternative settings. There are no explicit options to change settings although a hidden menu springs up if you press the right combination of buttons. (see below for more)
  • You shall remain locked to the amount you carry in renewal voucher
Even the prepaid renewal voucher of Tata Sky is designed to get the most out of you. It only comes in the denomination of Rs 550 - which is more than what you need for a month's subscription (Rs 300) but not enough for two month (Rs 600). So at any given time you have Rs 250 always locked up in the voucher whether you want it or not. Perfect for Tata Sky because they want you to pay for their premium services. Not for someone who has no intention of paying for those services.

Not coincidentally, the renewal voucher is the only way to make payment with Tata Sky while Dish TV allows you to pay using several modes of payment.

To sum up all the above, buying Tata Sky digicomp and services was like buying a car which I cannot run on any fuel except the one supplied by the car maker. I must keep buying the fuel from them because if I stop, they can take away my car for which I paid in full!

In US or UK, there's no contract when you sign up for a satellite TV service. The contract only comes in when you get the equipment for free. It's only in India that we are made to sign on these ridiculous terms. What surprised me most in this episode is the utter ignorance about the terms of the contract within Tata Sky itself. The engineer who came for installation said my signature is needed as an authorisation for installation. His team leader I spoke with had no information about the terms. Two senior people in the organisation that the dealer made me speak to prior to refund, also proffered ignorance about these terms and had no convincing answer.

Other things you perhaps didn't know about Tata Sky
  • The reception is extremely poor or unavailable during rains. This however, is true about every satellite TV service in the world. Tata Sky makes no mention of it on their website.
  • Their toll-free number only works with MTNL / BSNL lines. If you're an Airtel subscriber, you'll have to call an STD number to get customer support. Knowing how long these calls take, the support will end up costing you quite a bit. (You can't go out and call from another phone because you might need to sit next to the TV if they tell you to change some settings)
  • In North Delhi, there have been reports that NDPL, also a Tata company, is using force to remove cable connections from NDPL electricity poles causing disruption in the cable infrastructure and forcing cable TV subscribers in 800,000 homes to upgrade to Tata Sky.
  • The set-top box that Tata Sky provides has a hidden port to accept PC card but it's been rendered useless since there's no software interface to use it. It's hidden behind a small plate held by two screws at the back.
  • They charge you Rs. 1000 when you change a house.
  • They will never tell you this but you can watch TV in more than one room with a single set-top box though you'll only be able to watch the same channel on all TVs.
  • There is a hidden settings menu in their interface for the technically inclined. Go to Organiser > System Settings > press 0, 1 and <select> button in quick succession. You'll get to DNB settings and other options.
  • The Tata Sky set-top box is from Thomson, their remote identical to those you get with SkyTV in UK and the software is from Open TV, the firm that sells software to Sky TV (apparently, it's from NDS). Apparently, no one has been able to hack Sky TV (at least not publicly) to use the service without paying subscription fees.

What can you do to protest?
  • Do not purchase their service. If you must, then refuse to sign the contract and demand they respect your rights.
  • Flood their customer care centre asking them questions about the three issues: ownership, privacy and restrictions.
  • Tell others to avoid Tata Sky. At least until they revise their terms and change restrictive policies. Another thing to remember is that there are other DTH players like Reliance, Airtel and new technologies such as IPTV that are on the horizon.

UPDATE, Mar-7: It turns out, 1-860-425-6633 is NOT a toll-free number either (though one certainly gets the impression). Another fact I forgot to add first time is that the 1-year guarantee does not cover every part of the equipment and only selected parts. Now someone in comments mentions that there are hidden annual maintenance charges of Rs.500 after the guarantee period and that you can land in serious trouble if you do not pay that.

UPDATE, Mar-7 (2): An anonymous user writing in comments below, made a couple of clarifications on Tata Sky's behalf. One - they can only take away "Tata Sky Hardware" (the dish) not the set-top box which is the consumer's property. As I replied below, this doesn't make any difference because the set-top box is useless without the dish. The dish should be the buyer's property and they should be allowed to receive any service they desire. The fact that Tata Sky doesn't allow this and that non-ownership of dish isn't made explicit prior to the purchase is is clearly a restrictive and unfair trade practice created solely to prevent competition.

Second, apparently, Tata Sky recently changed the clause about monitoring usage and now it's an opt-in feature. Why would anyone opt in to avail this is beyond me. Since it's the Tata Sky engineer who fills-in the contract form, how can the user even learn that such an option exists or ensure that it's not ticked after his signature? I certainly wasn't told about this during my installation. Clearly, the idea of the contract has to go. If a provider wants me to sign up and stay with them for a stipulated period, they should provide all the equipment for free.

By the way, this is now officially the most popular post on this blog. Thanks for all the encouragement, please tell others about this post and link to it from your blogs.

UPDATE, Mar-13: I received a comment elsewhere from an existing Tata Sky user that essentially said: "It isn't as bad as you're making it out to be - look, its working fine." I want to respond to this because I think many Tata Sky users might be feeling this way after reading my review.

I agreed early on in my review that the user experience - quality of broadcast and interaction with the features, is indeed superior. However, there's more to a product or service than the immediate user experience. My review of Tata Sky is more about the way the plan is structured and how it hijacks consumer rights.

There are certain assumptions that constitute what I'd call a "fair purchase" of a product or service. I assume that my following rights (among others) are being respected:
  1. The right to be explicitly told, prior to the purchase, the product (or product components), and/or service that is being purchased.

  2. The right to be explicitly told, prior to the purchase, the terms and conditions - in an easy to understand manner - that constitute the transaction.

  3. The right to be explicitly told, prior to the purchase, any important limitations of the product/service purchased.

  4. The right to be charged a reasonable price for the product/service and, if there are recurring payments to be made, the right to pay the agreed sum at reasonable intervals rather than in advance without any incentive.

  5. The right to have my personal information respected and/or the right to decide if I may allow to share it.

  6. The right to receive incentive/s for allowing to share my personal information if I so decide.

  7. The right to receive full utility inherent in the nature of the product/service without any restrictions artificially and intentionally imposed.

  8. The right to receive a refund within a stipulated period if I'm unsatisfied with the product/service.

  9. The right to exit the service without an added cost and/or the right to decide if I may retain the service for an agreeable period.

  10. The right to receive an incentive if I decide to retain the service for the agreed period.
Purchasing Tata Sky requires a consumer to abandon all the above rights. I believe that the benefits gained by making the purchase are not worth the compromise.

UPDATE, Apr-3: Since this post continues to get a lot of attention, I decided to update it with new information I gleaned recently. Although it might seem that Cable TV subscription costs (around Rs.300/mth in metros) are comparable with Tata Sky subscription (Rs.300/mth), yet if you add all the hidden costs of Tata Sky a very different picture emerges. This is particularly true in case of multiple TVs where Tata Sky is over two and a half times more expensive than cable over a five year period.

Five-Year Cost Comparison Between Cable TV (analogue) and Tata Sky

single TV      two TVs      three TVs

Cable TV          Rs.18,240     Rs.18,370     Rs.18,450

Tata Sky*         Rs.24,000     Rs.35,500     Rs.47,000

* assuming you don't relocate and your set top box doesn't breakdown after one year. If either of these happen, add additional cost. See the calculation behind this.
_______________________________________

How was this calculated?

The costs in all cases include hardware, installation, subscription and maintenance costs (at today's prices) over a five year period. Basically, Cable TV is so cheap because it costs next to nothing to connect multiple TVs and because it has no maintenance costs. All you need is a coaxial cable splitter and you can connect as many TVs as you want. Since there is no STB so you don't have to worry about maintenance either.

Note that in case of Cable TV, the only installation expense is the cost of coaxial cable you use from the nearest connection to your house. The cable guy might quote a prohibitive amount for this wire but you have the option of getting your own (it's freely available at hardware stores) at a much cheaper price.

Here is a complete breakup of the costs over five year period for three televisions.

Cable TV - three TVs

HARDWARE
Installation Wiring = Rs.8/m x 30m = Rs.240 (would vary)
Coaxial Cable Splitter (three-way) = Rs.50
Wiring for two additional TVs = Rs.8/m x 20m = Rs.160 approx.

SUBSCRIPTION
Five years = Rs. 300 x 60 months = Rs.18,000

MAINTENANCE
Zero maintenance

TOTAL Rs.18,450
________________________________________

Tata Sky - three TVs

HARDWARE
Three set top boxes = Rs.3000 x 3 = Rs.9000
Installation primary = Rs.1000
Installation secondary = Rs.500 x 2 = Rs.1000

SUBSCRIPTION
Five years = (Rs.300+100+100) x 60 months = Rs.30,000

MAINTENANCE
Annual maintenance charges for three STBs after first year = (3 x Rs.500) x 4yrs = Rs.6,000

TOTAL Rs.47,000
________________________________________
Bottom Line: If you use Cable TV for three TVs over a ten year period, you save Rs.57,100. Good enough for a home theater projection system. You also incur zero cost on maintenance, zero cost on relocation, you get a larger collection of channels and more protection against price hike in subscription since you can pressure your cable operator but can't do anything if Tata Sky raises the prices.

UPDATE, Apr-26:

Tata Sky Drops 13 Zee Channels Without Explanation

Sometime around end of March Tata Sky stopped broadcasting 13 Zee channels without giving as much as an explanation over the reason behind the draconian action. Well, this is one gets when one surrenders their rights in favor of "excellent picture quality". As much as we all like to hate our cable operator, we'll have to admit that something like this would never happen with cable TV.

As TS user Sampath noted in comments below: "Tatasky makes a tomtom when it adds channels but is radiantly silent when channels are dropped." Apparently they even removed two Neo Sports channels recently, reducing total number of channels to 91 and not 100 as advertised.

Another user Pramila wrote on April 25: "Even today their site mentions that all these channels are available. This is cheating of the first order."

Those who have studied the TDSAT ruling behind this action say that Tata Sky will now save Rs.42 per consumer. However, they have not reduced subscription charges to pass on these savings even though they are quite prompt in increasing the price when additional costs are incurred by adding new channels.

The channels which have been discontinued by Tata Sky include Zee Classic, Zee Action, Zee Premier, ETC, Zee Music, Zee Sports, 24Ghante, Play TV, Zee Jagran, Zee Smile, and regional channels such as Zee Kannada, Zee Telegu and ETC Punjabi.

UPDATE, Sep-01:

TRAI Issues DTH Regulations: Big Win For Consumers

Over the past six months, this post has reached an estimated 100,000 people (directly and through word-of-mouth) and has received over 300 comments. But today all those who have suffered through the hands of their DTH operator have a chance to rejoice. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has just issued DTH guidelines that address almost all the issues raised in this post about six months ago and others identified in the comments.

From December 2007 onwards: DTH providers cannot lock you to use their own hardware - the STBs will now work with all providers. They must provide hardware refunds if the consumer wishes to return it. They must attend complaints of quality within a specified period. Prepayment vouchers must not be only paying mechanism. Providers cannot suddenly cancel any pay channel in a short period and without previous notice. Best of all, you can now choose which channels to watch - you don't have to subscribe to channel bouquet offered by the provider!

This is a major win for all those who have expressed their experiences of poor customer service and deceitful practices of Tata Sky. I'd like to think that this post too made a small contribution in bringing the issues to TRAI's attention. I did contact them several months ago with a copy of this post and comments. Although they were already working on DTH regulation at that time, yet many issues raised in this post were missing from their DTH consultation paper issued in Feb.

These problems have now been addressed. We'll never know if this post made a difference but ultimately what matters is that consumer rights have been upheld and DTH operators brought under control. Tata Sky and other operators can no longer do anything they want making a mockery of consumer rights.

To read more about the regulations, see the following stories:

Hindustan Times: Change DTH operator, keep set top box

Hindustan Times: Come December, order DTH a la carte

Business Standard: Trai directs DTH cos to offer refunds

Rediff: TRAI to bat for DTH customers

They have a referral program thats been on for a while now. Under its clause it states that for every referral get RS.300/- added to your Tata Sky account.

Now my tenant at the flat I own wanted Tata Sky installed, so I called the company and asked them to install the set top box under the referral program. They did. Somehow some Mr.Juststolemy300Rs. got the benefits of my referral.

After over a dozen phone calls (because after the first three calls I was determined to get my rightful amount) they said it would be done.

A few more calls later they said they couldn't confirm the information. A year later I am still to receive the money for a referred Set top box installed in my own house. While they reap the benefits of having a new customer.

In addition to this, the Tata sky advertises the fact that it has DVD clarity. For the people who like details that is a resolution of 720×576 (PAL) at 29.97 or 25 FPS. I am certain this is false. I get pixilated images on screen. (32' samsung LCD)

We are going for TataSky. All the ads and recommendations from my 2-3 friends have prompted this. We had the impression it was very good. Unfortunately, I read the blog the day the engineer had to come.

I have some issues with TS:

They are providing regional channels useless to me in the base packs and for getting neo sports and neo cricket and good times, I will have to take an add-on pack, 2 infact. For 1 or 2 channels, I have to take a whole pack. This is unfair.

They should let us choose individual channels.

Some of my friends have it installed, and they say its brilliant. I had not been introduced to any of its downsides until after we decided to take it.

The problem is that we are anyway hugely dissatisfied with cable TV, and now with DTH having such problems, what options do we have?

A report in The Hindu, Chennai Edition dated 10-Jul-2008 said that DishTV is providing "high-quality Korean set-top boxes " that are inter-operable as per TRAI guidelines. Does anybody have information on the correctness of this and if correct, how do I identify that a set-top box offered by a dealer is inter-operable?

we were considering DishTv or Tata Sky especially with the olympics round the corner. This discussion has been most useful. I now realise that most satelite service providers use similar strategies to lock-in and squeeze customers. I've had similar conversations with customer service personnel of WORLDSPACE radio.
Horrible guys, slightly retarded too.

in fact tata has this practice of squeezing the maximum out of customers in all their business ventures, take a vehicle for a free service at a tata dealership and you are charged for consumables even if no car washing or top ups are done. even repair bills are give u a sense that you are being fooled. one will know the difference when being to other brand's dealerships dealing the same category of vehicles.

I made the mistake of paying more than my monthly charges so that I could avoid the pains of paying the dues from time to time. I am now told by their customer care that the additional amount in my account cannot be refunded if I wish to deactivate the transmission. I am forced to bear with their services till this amount is exhausted. They do not have a refund policy.
Further, I cannot deactivate the services for a month or two if I am travelling (like I could with a cable operator). The charges will automatically be charged to me.

All this frustration over and above the usual issues of bad service and increasing costs...Is there a solution to this misery?

Yes! After all this I feel it necessary to say about Dish TV. It is in no way different. Their quality of service is also very poor. By quality of service I mean both viewing experience and compliant redressal. There must be something wrong with the hardware they had given me. Right from day one I have problem with the audio with volume dropping on its own and many times I need to switch off and switch on the equipment again. Most of the times, many channels carry a message that your STB or the Antenna is not connected properly.
As has been rightly observed earlier in the posts, your calls to Customer Care are not toll free and you end up paying much more that the subscription itself.
Though Dish TV had widely advertised the customers to register their mobile numbers such that they are automatically recognised when they call customer care this is simply not the case. You need to go through the rigours of entering your 11 digit VC number first and later reveal all your identification tags to the executive costing you much money and causing you lot of inconvenience. After all this you are sue to receive some stupid advises regardless of the fact that you are not calling them for the first time and you had already exhausted those options.
This is really cheating by these corporates. Regulating bodies should make the grievance redressal mechanism much more easy to reach and advertise the same.

Tata sky does it again. They have increased the price of the LIfeStyle gold package from Rs. 30 pm to Rs. 45 pm. The reason I belive they would be giving is that they added few channels like 9X, Colors etc.. but guess what all these channels are Free to Air. So what is costing them to air these channels.>>I would say these should be shown in the basic package.. Why to charge for FTA channels...?

Tata sky is bad on ethics and is a disgrace to the Tata reputation...

They are due to learn their lesson.. Hopefully new operators and market forces would teach them the due lesson.

hello , i woould like to share about my tata sky experience.one thing people didnot get that the vouchers u r using deducts on daily basis ,in my case i have two tv so i have opte for super saver and lifestyle gold pack i.e rs 260+45+125=430/30 1 day 14.3.so how do i save it,like if i recharged with rs 400 coupon on 1 augustthe due date will be 27th and u get three more days viewing before disconnection .after due date ur a/c balance goes in (-)42.9.then next i will rechararge
on 1st september it will last til 24th then again 3 days till 27th so this way i try to balance my monthly budget to rs 400.one more thing to add up like in cable u get rs 5 per channel fixed but the tata sky is charging like for ten sports rs 15 ,for two neo channels rs 30 per month, one more thing the lifestyle gold include channels whch r free to air in cable like bindass ,zoom,9x for which they r charging.one when i asked there customer care about this they told me that the rates r decided by the broadcasters so they cant do much about it.the channels r about rs 140 but half of them r regional i dont watch them but i have no choice as they r part of packages and most of them r free to air in cable so i still have to pay for them.what can be done to overcome the monopoly in prices as this creats problem in the monthly budget if they r going to make package for ever channel.they did not even gave notice about removing the audio channels as my dad used to listen oid songs on them.but one cant do much about it as i have alredy invested rs 7000 on (stb).do u think compling to trai will make a difference. thanks

Sorry guys for jumping too late in this.

I have been using Dish TV for last almost more than 2 years and now I have started feeling that I should move to TATA Sky because it has got some good channels like Colors, World Movies, UTV Movies etc.

But now after reading this blog, I'm afraid even if I make my move, no one guarantees that TATA Sky wouldn't stop those channels.

Anyway - whatever be the case, Manu has done a great job in this context. Excellent!

I read few points when someone talked about cable TV. So let me share *my* experience with cable TV.

1. They talk rudely.
2. Their wires get broken by trucks and other heavy vehicle if comes into colony. (very common)
3. They take time to correct above mentioned problem.
4. If electricity goes out (like very common in Ghaziabad, NOIDA etc) they take time to start the generator.
5. After 12:00 in night, they don't start the generator at all, if electricity goes out.
6. In late night, in case of storm, if some problem occurs which could be rectified quickly, you need to wait until morning.
7. They are notorious and don't let other cable operator to survive in their areas.

Anyway - I guess I have gone away from the topic. Let me come back. So, I agree with each and every point of Manu. So if someone is making money while using my name/information I should get some incentive.

Anyway - good post. Keep it up.

Blogger Dead Weight:

Hi
I have been thinking of buying a DTH for long being fed up of my local cablewallah. However whenever I looked at the packages and offers of both Dish and TataSky I realized they were not value for money and I could do without DTH for the time being. With the launch of Big Tv DTH I once again decided to check what was on offer. And I am really surprised at what I found today on this forum. Having read all the posts here I can conclude that DTH is injurious to your mental fiscal and physical health just like cancer. I always had an inkling of doubt whenever I checked their websites to read about their packages, their mode of payment (tataSky's recharge coupons) and installation charges and terms and conditions. I always used to postpone my buying decision due to this. It seems I was always right. My sympathies to those mass of people who bought, fought and lost against the DTHwallahs. I for one have decided to wait it out till something substantially good comes along, maybe IPTV for one.

I'm trying to start one here.. All those who are subscribed to this post.. Please do this as we try to post something against Tatasky..

1. register a query online in the my tatasky section.
2. Once they call to resolve the query, tell them how u feel about having colors added to the pack sirectly.. and how u condemn the packaging system.
3. Leave suggestions to the customer care about the packages..
4. call the customer care from an unknown line (Ur nos will be identified) and pose as a new customer enquiring about the packages.. tell them if they do not change packages, u do not intend to buy Tatasky.. and add this line to the end. "TataSky is the worst DTH service in India, I sympathise with ur subscribers.. All new offers are only for the new susbscribersd while the old ones suffer.. What TataSky does is to lure the goat to the slaughter hoiuse and the rest is history"

Please do this and i guess there will be something that will happen.

TataSky is a national service, It has to give all channels.. U can well subscribe to the other packages..

Lifestle gold is however made available at a price of Rs.45 which is very costly.. The increase of rs.15 on adding colors, is not Justified!

I am having a Tata Sky connection for last three years. During one month, the digicomps (they bring the repaired ones, read faulty ones intentionally) they have provided simply do not work. I have complained to their call center, their techies come and replace it with another faulty one that may work for a day or two, then it doesn't. It has happened three times.
Added to all this, they charge Rs. 350 every time they come to visit. Simultaneously, they are they keep on charging daily from the amount you have recharged your connection though you are not able to utilize/view their DTH service.
I asked the call-center person if I could talk to a person to put the complain. He told me that there is no other way.

Why on the earth are you always blaming Tata Sky? Do you make a living out of it?

I'm using Tata Sky Service from its launch and I never had any problem.

The DTH industry is still in its infancy or at least in childhood phase and its normal that there could be some issues arising. Whatever the case is, wait until the DTH market matures and you'll get refined services.

Why everybody blames Tata Sky??? Have you ever used Dish TV??? or Sun direct???? they are certainly not doing well than Tata Sky.

Tata Group had done many good things for the development of India. Which private companies in India have so much corporate social responsibility as the Tatas' have??? Ever heard of IIS in Bangalore??? OR Tata Institute for Fundamental Research (TIFR)??? OR Tata Cancer research foundation & hospital??? and many SOCIAL WELFARE TRUSTS the company runs???

People just see the silly and trivial issues and blames the entire company and its reputation so badly and sees it like a shit. They forget all the good that has been done, they just remember the not so good points even if the real fault is not with the company or it have no control over the issues.

Dear bloggers, you are free to choose whatever DTH provider that pleases you.....right? Then go for it man....nobody bugs you to sign-up for a specific DTH service provider. I just request you not to degrade the reputation of any company but writing the things you know, seeing the things from only your perspective and stating them as facts and unnecessarily exaggerating things that you know little about.

If I were to buy a product, then I wound never depend on others to make a choice. I would personally do the research. Few of the things I consider would be: 1.Product Features, 2.Customer care, 3.Brand reputation, 4.Corporate Social Responsibility of the brand...etc.

What this post says about is absolutely true.
My grievance with Tatasky was as follows:
1. While scanning through the channels why have I to go through the channels which I do not want to see.
**Their answer was that you add the channels to your favorites
2. Even If I add channels to favorites they are just limited to 20 channels or so.
3. To add to favorite or not is my discretion.
4. What I want and expect that, all those channels which I never see; I must have an option on my remote to either delete or hide them.
** Channels number if entered; does take you to that channel but I dont remember them always.
5. The sequence of the channel cannot be chosen from the remote.

In case any assistance I can provide to you Sir, I will be pleased to contribute to fight for consumer's right, even if needs financial contribution:

Recently I fell for a TATA brand when I took subscription of TATASKY .While they offered the worst packages, Ihad no choice because , my first choice , AIRTEL could not get a clear line of sight .
And that has started my woe list. I took the FAMILY Pack , Lifestyle Gold and ESPN Star Sports . Was rudely shocked when I could not change the language option to English for channels like NGC , Discovery , CN , Disney, etc.

I thought I had paid for the channels / not the langauge !!!

When I spoke to their technical team in Pune , they said that the broadcaster does not give English as an option.

After probing further , they admitted that , it was because of the Family Pack and the language option would be available for the Super Saver Package .

I have checked the website and there is no such information .
I was not informed when I opted for TATASKY by the customer service executive .

I think that this is against my right to language , and TATASKY cannot filter what language will be available to me if I have paid for channels in a particular package .

Hi Manu,
There is a lot of discussion about TATA-SKY & other DTH providers in the blog.Kudos for the effort! There will always be some people, who will disagree to your point of view. Never mind them.
But one more important point which all of us probably never considered is regarding the claim of DVD QUALITY PICTURE/VIDEO by all of the DTH PROVIDERS. No one is giving 480p video, which is actual DVD video. If it is so(incorrect information in advertisment), is TRAI taking this point into consideration. Can we raise a PIL in court of justice for the same.

In countries like UK / AUS Foxtel offers free installation on a 12 month contract with IQ2 STB OR else you pay an hefty sum for installation without contract. In either case the foxtel STB is taken away when you opt out.

I wish I had seen your posts earlier. I just learnt my lesson with Tata Sky although I am shocked that a Tata group company would behave this way. (I always believed the Tata group was more "respectful" Indian group compared to others such as Reliance.

Anyways, my digicomp in Goa stopped working. after 5 days of follow-up, the engineer came with another box - which was "old" and re-serviced and surprise, surprise, also was not working!!!

He went back, never came again. Subsequent phone calls to his boss and he said most digicomps have some power problem. In fact mine was already replaced last December. Now again the same problem. 10 days passed and they still cannot give a date when they can fix it.

Fed up, I switched to Videocon DTH. And asked Tata sky for refund. Big mistake. I've just researched "tata sky refund" and saw your article dating back to 2007!!! Spent hours on the phone but no use.

Feel the pinch of losing hard earned money. And it hurts. But what the heck, it's their conscience. I doubt they get good sleep at night stealing and cheating from people.

I think that the only way to rise in India. Step on others? Ratan Tata, hope my 500 bucks makes your life better and longer! Keep the change!

Tata sky will have different packages, but all these are now for cheating customer. If you are taken south or north Indian packages on your interest. The tata sky will decide what channels you should watch today and after a day or month. Because, anytime these channel you’re watching will not be available.

I subscribed this south Indian package in tata sky after going through the channels they have offered to me. Once we start using these channels, the tata sky will decide you can watch these channel only after you’re payment. Because, if your friend don’t like or other 10 friends like. The tata sky will take out those channels, and with out updating customer. But, they always to update customer end of month for payment alert.

If the tata sky signal are not getting accurately. They will tell because of customer mistake, if you pay 300/- bugs technical person will resolve. Also the validity is 3 months; if you have signaled issue again your mistake only. Keep paying to tata sky, and until unless tata sky set their dish properly.

So customer should very careful before taking tata sky packages, and anytime you will be cheated.

I have gone through an article....

tatasky logo
It looks like TataSky is leaving no stone unturned to free up valuable bandwidth on its platform. Due to delays from ISRO in providing the promised transponders, TataSky is loosing the edge in the highly competitive DTH market in India due to lack of HD channels on its platform. TataSky has the lowest number of HD channels out of all the DTH operators in India.

TataSky has tied up with Broadcom to provide them with MPEG4 based standard definition set top boxes which they are replacing free of cost for all of their old subscribers. These are the oldest boxes that subscribers purchased during initial years of DTH launch in India. All SD+, HD, HD+ & newer SD boxes are MPEG4 based. TataSky plans to replace around 5 – 6 million such boxes over a period of one year.

This move will free up a lot of bandwidth on TataSky’s existing transponders as MPEG4 technology takes up a lot less bandwidth than MPEG2 without much loss in quality.

But still they are advertising for amount for upgradation.

See following link.....

Hi @Manu,
I'm using Tata Sky since 2008 and I'm happy with it so far.

I think you need to update your blog. Lot of points mentioned in your blog are not correct, may be at the time you posted, but seems obsolete now.

- Disk belongs to them: I don't care, they won't come to my home to take it if I don't use it. And even if I stop using it why should I deactivate. Just stop using it, and why would I ask for refund, will you ask for a refund for a TV/Radio if you stop using it?

- Rights of your information: You also give your PII Information to Banks/Gas Agencies/CellPhone Providers, they also use your information the same way, and BTW DNB is for you.

- I haven't got any SPAM sms or email ever from Tata Sky.

- Rs. 550 Renewal voucher: I top up online and there is option to charge with any amount. So i charge with 400 per month.

- Reception is extremely poor or unavailable during rains, its OBVIOUS, this occasion is and will be rare.

- Customer care is good, once they charged me twice for INR 300, but on calling them they reverted it back.

- Cable TV is cheap: also the quality is very cheap, and no Hi-Def. Also Cable TV providers show lot of adds hovering almost half the TV screen. Tata Sky video quality is good.

- Recharge amount: they don't charge 1000, I've relocated about 3-4 times from NOIDA, Faridabad, NOIDA, Hyderabad, they charged only 300 Rs. every time which includes 15mt cable and setting the antina, which is reasonable.

- Once I was out of country for 6 months, didn't charged for that entire period and when I came back they called me and asked that why I'm not recharging and could help me by providing some discounts if I recharge. Its good, they are trying to retain they customer, whats wrong in this?

Yes, there may be some issues which you may have faced, but I'm happy with Tata Sky so far.

For the past one month Tatasky has been flashing a runner on the TV programs that they are upgrading, and so the viewers should have patience if their TV sets do not receive signals properly.
I do not know about others but I have had a dismal viewing since 12 March. I have two TVs , and am a Premium subscriber. As my TV sets stopped receiving practically all English channels, I called up their service centre, gave missed calls calls to the numbers flashed on the TV, chatted online with their swervice centre - all to get their engineer to visit and let me know why I am not receiving English channels, and patchy reception of other channels.
Even a month later, I am still to get any concrete response. No one from their Service centre has turned up, or even called.
My advice, stay away from Tatasky. Its a 900 pound gorilla who cannot be held accountable.

Can you please throw some light on my situation.
I bought an SD box,and later got a HD recording one.I had asked for a the new connection, but somehow the engg convinced me to take it as a upgrade.
Now I realised that because he said upgrade he dint give me the dish antenna.well I almost forgot about the whole thing since it's 5 years old.
Now I discovered my old SD box which I plan to sell, but the call centre does not have an answer if the hardware still is being supported by them.
In case I sell they say I have to seek the entire connection that is my subscription id.its not like you have a spare phone which you ain't using,so sell it.
Is there any solution for this???

May I simply just say what a comfort to discover somebody who genuinely knows what they're talking about on the
net. You actually know how to bring a problem
to light and make it important. More and more people need to look at this and understand
this side of your story. I can't believe you are not more popular given that you definitely have the gift.

I do not know if it's just me or if everybody else experiencing issues with your
blog. It appears like some of the written text within your content are running off the
screen. Can someone else please comment and let me know if this is
happening to them as well? This could be a
problem with my internet browser because I've had this happen previously.
Cheers
